IMT – Types of Mats

Mat is a general term to describe an individual who is a disciple of Matology and who has been through BMT or Basic Mat Training. You can address all disciples of Mat as Mats, and it is fine (life is good).

The suffix is what determines what type of Mat or which IMT (Intermediate Mat Training) or discipline that the Mat has undergone/specialise in. In most disciplines, there are three levels 1) Padawan – Beginner level, 2) Knight – Highly Proficient and 3) Master – Master level lah.

In most disciplines, there are three levels 1) Padawan – Beginner level, 2) Knight – Highly Proficient and 3) Master – Master level lah.

And just like most things in life, there is a Light Side, a Dark Side and the Grey Side.

Below is a list of IMT that higher levels Mats have undergone.

Mat Berg (Padawan of the Way of the Iron) (Light Side)

  – Mat Abang Body (Knight of the Way of the Iron: Physique)

  – Mat Abang Sapaw (Knight of the Way of the Iron: Bodybuilding)

  – Mat Abang Abang Body (Master of the Way of the Iron: Physique)

  – Mat Abang Abang Sapaw (Master of the Way of the Iron: Bodybuilding)

Refers to the Mat who has dedicated their life to the Way of the Iron. Calling them either “body”, “berg” or “sapaw” is generally acceptable for non-Mats or in general. But in reality, while there are all pursing there is a ranking order or difference in title. “Berg” is the lowest level and is used to described any big Mats (or with some Mass) that is trying the way something like a young padawan. Now abang is a malay word to used to address an older brother (with respect). Thus “Abang Body” is higher up in the Way of the Iron and choose to specialise in the way of the Physique. “Abang Sapaw” is also higher up in the Way of the Iron and choose to specialise in traditional bodybuilding.
